Project overview
The challenge
Rooted in Oakland’s Fruitvale neighborhood for more than 60 years, The Unity Council connects residents with education, employment, affordable housing, and community support. Its website needed to help people at very different stages of life—from families seeking preschool to job seekers and seniors—find the programs and resources relevant to them.
Our work
BlinkTag designed and implemented the main website around the people the Unity Council serves and the resources they need. We also created a stand alone site for the Oakland Día de Los Muertos Festival.
Housing and places for community
The Unity Council develops and preserves housing for families, seniors, and people with special needs, and provides property management and resident services. Its managed properties include Fruitvale Transit Village, Casa Velasco, Las Bougainvilleas, and Posada de Colores, alongside the Fruitvale Public Market and Community Resource Center. This work brings housing, shops, and community services together in the neighborhood.

Three decades of Día Oakland
The Oakland Día de los Muertos Festival is a major gathering in Fruitvale and a longstanding part of Oakland’s cultural life. The Unity Council describes the free outdoor celebration as drawing around 100,000 people for music, Latin American artisans, family activities, and community-created altars honoring loved ones. The festival reaches its 31st year in 2026.
Our separate Día Oakland website gives the festival a dedicated home alongside the main Unity Council website and the site we created for Peralta Service Corporation.
