The challenge
The consequences of a new highway lane can be difficult to explain. RMI needed a practical way for people to explore the induced travel research behind its report.
Our work
Working with researchers at RMI and UC Davis, we developed the SHIFT Calculator and supporting microsite. RMI funded the expansion of our California Induced Travel Calculator into a national tool.
From highway expansion to estimated travel
Visitors select a road type, state and county, and proposed lane-miles. The calculator applies induced-travel research to estimate additional vehicle miles traveled, fuel consumption, and carbon emissions. Visitors can change the inputs to compare expansion scenarios.
