Induced travel research in California’s highway debate
The Los Angeles Times cited the California Induced Travel Calculator in its 2024 reporting on highway expansion.
BlinkTag built the calculator with the National Center for Sustainable Transportation at UC Davis. Users select a road type, county, and added lane-miles to estimate the additional vehicle travel associated with a capacity expansion.
Our role was to translate the researchers’ methodology into a public web tool. That makes the calculation easier to explore and discuss without requiring each reader to build a model. The result estimates induced travel; it is not a complete environmental assessment of a highway project.
